The Armadillo Basketball Court initiative is an investment in the people and will have a long lasting and positive impact on the lives of the residents. We are pleased to know that the neighborhood will be enjoying the fruits of our efforts.
Through Mayor Wagner's personal sponsorship and strategic planning by our LED Department, the court was not only opened to the public, but the remainder of the park will soon be fitted with new amenities such as a snack shop, plants, benches, trash cans, etc. through our ongoing Commonwealth Local Government Forum project.
At a private opening ceremony today, Mayor Wagner shared a few words in the presence of his fellow BCC representatives, Councillors Albert Vaughan and Dr. Candice Pitts, aspiring Councilor Kaya Cattouse and Community Leader Shane "Mud" Harris.
Shortly after, ten neighborhood youths were invited to participate in a three-point shootout, and were given a brief shooting tutorial by local NEBL star and our Programs Manager, Devin Daly. The participants took individual turns playing in the 3pt shoot out in recognition of the restrictions on contact sports, and all participants received certificates, snacks and refreshments and their own personal basketballs.
Aside from promoting good sportsmanship, athleticism, health and wellness upon relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions, it is envisioned that the facility will strengthen community engagement and civic pride while enhancing local economic development within the immediate neighborhood of Armadillo Street and the city as a whole.
