TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT AND SPECIAL CONSTABLES UNIT MERGED TO FORM THE NEW ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENT

(Friday, July 29th, 2022)   The Belize City Council hereby informs the general public that in an effort to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of enforcement within Belize City, the Traffic Department and the Special Constables Unit will merge, thus, forming a new department known as the Enforcement Department. This merger will come into effect on August 1st, 2022. The Enforcement Department will consist of four units which includes the Traffic Unit, Parking Meters Unit, Internal Security and Discipline Unit and the Trade and Liquor License Unit.

In order to ensure all enforcement officers are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to execute their duties, all members of the department have been sworn in as Special Constables following completion of training conducted by the Belize Police Department. These sessions covered topics such as constitutional rights, road traffic law, powers and methods of arrest, intoxicating liquor license, report writing, court functions, notice of intended prosecution and more. For those officers who were previously sworn in, the training served as a refresher course. In addition, the enforcement staff have been provided with new standard black and white uniforms and accessories which will assist them in performing their assigned duties. More importantly, our officers are now equipped with the power to arrest.

With the new strengthening of the enforcement team, The Belize City Council looks forward to working with Belize City residents to protect our community and ensure that we all act in accordance with the law.
