We have proudly formalized a 13-year friendship between Belize City and the City of Miramar, Florida, through the official signing of our Sister City Agreement. The ceremony, held at the Town Center / City Hall in Miramar on August 21st, 2024, was attended by Mayor Bernard Wagner, Councillor Stephanne Hamilton, Councillor Eluide Miller, and key dignitaries from Miramar, including Mayor Wayne Messam, city commissioners, the City Manager, Ambassador Sandhya Murphy of the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, and members of the Belizean diaspora. Representatives from Sister Cities International were also present to witness this significant milestone.
Mayor Messam emphasized the vast opportunities for collaboration in economic development, technology, tourism, and more, given Miramarโs pro-business environment and major industries. Miramar hosts several businesses with global operations such as Stanley Black & Decker and Cummins, alongside prestigious institutions like Florida International University (FIU), which has consistently welcomed Belizean students in recent years.
In his speech, Mayor Wagner reflected on the potential for Belize City to follow Miramarโs example, describing Miramar as a "big sister" guiding Belize City toward sustainable development and prosperity.
The ceremony also featured Mayor Messam presenting Mayor Wagner with the keys to the city, symbolizing the deep bond between our communities. Members of the diaspora and the wider community shared in the excitement, recognizing the promise this partnership holds for Belizeans at home and abroad.
Mayor Wagner and the Belize City Council extend heartfelt thanks to Mayor Wayne Messam, the City Administration, and the Belizean diaspora for their dedication and effort in making this partnership a reality. We look forward to nurturing and growing this relationship, paving the way for a bright and prosperous future together!
