HelpAge Belize, in partnership with your Belize City Council, proudly kicked off the celebration for Older Persons Week 2024 with A Day in the Park event! Deputy Mayor Allan Pollard Jr., along with Councillors Kaya Cattouse, Sherwin Garcia, Evan Thompson, Stephanne Hamilton, and Malcolm Nunez were honored to participate on this special occasion.

The event welcomed 127 active senior citizens from HelpAge Belize City, YWCA, Cielo Blue Home, and Sister Cecilia Home. Attendees enjoyed an entertaining performance by Ozzy the Clown, along with numerous giveaways and activities.

Councillor Kaya Cattouse, who oversees Women & Children, Special Needs, and Diverse Abilities Initiative portfolios, delivered the keynote address. She emphasized this yearโ€™s theme: โ€œDignified Aging: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Individuals in Belize.โ€

Councillor Cattouse also highlighted the necessity of fostering an inclusive city for all citizens, whether differently abled, marginalized, or elderly. She reinforced that every individual deserves a quality, comfortable, and dignified life as a fundamental human right.

City Council members served lunch to the elders and engaged in meaningful conversations, marking a heartfelt start to the weekโ€™s activities. Together, let us continue to honor and uplift our elders, advocating for systems that ensure they are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
