Councillor Kaya Cattouse proudly participated in the Music Album Reveal brought by the Battle of the Drums, celebrating a powerful initiative dedicated to preserving and uplifting Garifuna culture through music.
This annual Garifuna Song Competition continues to inspire young artists to create meaningful, high-quality Garifuna music, now strengthened by the establishment of a music publishing company. Through this effort, nine award-winning original songs have been compiled into the album Hamalali Wanigu (โVoices of Our Peopleโ), showcasing talent from the Belize Garifuna Song Competition between 2017 and 2024.
The live concert featured performances of these remarkable songs and honored five senior Garifuna artists who have contributed over 40 years to the industry. With the album officially launched at the event and now available on over 20 streaming platforms, this initiative not only celebrates culture but also creates real opportunities for artists to monetize their work.
Here at the Belize City Council, we proudly support initiatives like this and remain inspired by the richness, resilience, and beauty of our Garifuna heritage.
